How we can help empower parents

Our aim is to empower you; to fill your toolbox with practical strategies that you feel confident to use in any given situation.

Key components of our approach to working with you are:

  • increasing your understanding of autism
  • building your confidence to encourage interaction and communication with your child
  • building your skills to analyse and manage behaviour
Workshops

What it is:

  • Our workshops are aimed at anyone who wants to learn about autism!
  • Designed to be relevant and practical using evidence-based best practice, you will be able to tailor what you learn to your individual situation.
  • A series of 4 workshops, each building on the knowledge and understanding of the previous workshop. Priced at $50pp for individual workshops or a package deal of $180 for the full series of 4 workshops.

What we do:

  • Workshop 1: Understanding Autism
  • Workshop 2: Autism: Communication Made Visual
  • Workshop 3: Creating an Autism-friendly Environment
  • Workshop 4: Autism: Analysing and Managing Behaviour

As the workshops are designed as a series, it is advisable to attend Workshop 1: Understanding Autism, to gain a solid foundation before attending future workshops.

How we do it:

  • Our two and a half hour workshops follow our principle of introducing, explaining, applying and embedding- you’ll leave the workshop with a theoretical understanding and practical knowledge with strategies to start implementing immediately.
  • Our workshops are designed as small groups to provide opportunities for group sharing.
  • All materials and light refreshments are included in the price.
  • Certificates of attendance emailed after each workshop.
  • For larger group bookings (15+), please contact us to discuss tailored options.

Consulting

What it is:

A practical, tailored support service within the natural environment of the child, usually the child’s home.

What we do:

Based on the TEACCH approach we work with you to:

  • increase your understanding of autism and how it affects your child
  • recognise your child's strengths and interests and build your confidence to encourage interaction and communication with your child
  • build your skills to analyse and manage behaviour
  • create a physical environment which encourages learning and reduces anxiety

How we do it:

Every child with autism is different and a “one size fits all” approach doesn’t exist.

To determine how we can best meet your needs we will:

  • have an initial chat [free of charge] to get an understanding of how we can help
  • provide you with a proposal of how we can help and the costs involved

Professionals

What it is:

  • Our approach to supporting childcare centres and preschools is based on capacity building.

What we do:

  • Our goal is to empower staff to support the inclusion of children with disabilities and their families. We provide relevant, practical training that offers early childhood centres and preschools the knowledge, resources and support to implement the training into their centre and use the strategies and ideas with all children.

How we do it:

Our training provides you with:

  • Practical positive approaches that can be used in your early childhood environments
  • Follow up support to help you individualise and consolidate what you have learnt.
  • ToolKids provides organisations with the support and training they need to best serve the needs of the growing autism population. We offer in-person consultation and training designed to create an autism friendly environment for everyone involved, including the individual and their family, staff, and others. We will help you with integration and set you up for success.

Parent Programs

What it is:

  • The accredited autism-specific EarlyBird Program, created by the National Autistic Society (NAS) in the UK in 1997, is a 3 month program for parents of children aged 0-5yrs.
  • The program was developed in collaboration with parents of children with autism. The program works in partnership with parents to put you in control, so as to develop the potential of your pre-school aged child.

What we do:

We work with you:

  • to support you in the period between diagnosis and school placement
  • to empower you to facilitate your child's social communication and appropriate behaviour within your child's natural environment
  • to help you establish good practice in supporting your child at an early age so as to pre-empt the development of inappropriate behaviours

How we do it:

  • We invite you to an Information Session (1 hour) to find out more about the program
  • The program is 12 weeks; it consists of eight group sessions (2.5 hours) and four individual home visits (1hr). Video interaction guidance is an important part of the program.
  • A three-month follow up session is part of the program review.
  • Each program is designed for six families, with two designated spots for parents/carers.
  • This can be funded through your child’s NDIS package: Improved Daily Living (Therapy Supports, Parent/Carer Training)

What it is:

  • The accredited autism-specific EarlyBird Plus Program, created by the National Autistic Society (NAS) in the UK in 2003, is a three-month program for parents/carers of young children (5-8yrs) and for the professionals supporting them.
  • This worldwide evidence based early intervention parent program offers support for families whose child receives a later diagnosis; helping to bridge the gap by working with parents and school together

What we do:

We work with you:

  • to empower you by understanding your child’s autism, improving communication with your child and developing strategies to pre-empt problem behaviours and/or manage those which do occur
  • to encourage a consistent approach between home and school by training you and professionals together

How we do it:

  • We invite you to an Information Session (1 hour) to find out more about the program
  • The program is 10 weeks; it consists of eight group sessions (2.5 hours) and two individual home visits (1hr).
  • A three-month follow up session is part of the program review.
  • Each program is designed for six families, with two spaces for parents/carers and one for a professional currently working with their child
  • This can be funded through your child’s NDIS package: Improved Daily Living (Therapy Supports, Parent/Carer Training)
